Im Jahr 1938 wurden im ganzen Land im Zuge der sogenannten Reichskristallnacht Synagogen niedergebrannt, jüdische Friedhöfe geschändet und es kam zu brutalen antisemitischen Exzessen durch örtliche SS-Einheiten und auch von Teilen der saarländischen Zivilbevölkerung.
Ihre Vorfahren hatten sich zur Zeit des Ancien Régimes im Kurtrierischen, in Ostfrankreich und im Saarbrücker Umland gegen die Zahlung von Schutzgeldern niederlassen dürfen. Bei allen relevanten politischen Parteien und gesellschaftlichen Organisationen im Saargebiet bestand im
Hinblick auf die Abstimmung des Jahres 1935 Einigkeit hinsichtlich der Wiedervereinigung
mit dem deutschen Vaterland. Als quasi hymnischer Bekenntnisgesang wurde allenthalben auf
den prodeutschen Veranstaltungen eine Neutextung des Steigerliedes unter dem Titel „Deutsch ist die Saar,
deutsch immerdar“ populär, die 1920 von dem Saarbrücker Lehrer Hanns Maria Lux gedichtet worden war.
Das Hissen der an den Obrigkeitsstaat des Kaiserreichs gemahnenden schwarz-weiß-roten deutschen Flagge an den Häusern des Saargebietes
dokumentierte den Wunsch der Mehrheit der Bevölkerung, das Rad der Geschichte wieder in Richtung
Deutschland zurückzudrehen. Auch die Arbeiterparteien SPD und
KPD unterstützten den prodeutschen Protest im Saargebiet.
Die Regierungskommission des Saargebietes (Commission de gouvernement du Bassin de la
Sarre) übernahm Ende Februar 1920 die Regierungsgewalt
im Saargebiet und löste damit die vorherige französische Militärverwaltung ab.
Grewenigs Kunstschule wurde im Jahr 1924 zur Staatlichen Schule für Kunst und Kunstgewerbe Saarbrücken umgewandelt und Grewenig
war bis 1936 ihr erster Direktor. Ergänzt wurde diese
historische Schau durch eine moderne Kunstausstellung mit Werken von Wassily Kandinsky, Käthe Kollwitz, Schlemmer, Emil Nolde, Oskar Schlemmer, Otto Dix, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse sowie Amedeo
Modigliani. In diesem Zusammenhang kam es auch von Seiten anderer Ethnologen zu vermehrter musealer Sammeltätigkeit von Objekten saarländischer, aber auch elsass-lothringischer Volkskunde.
