Basis für die Rekatholisierung Saarbrückens
und St. Johanns im 19. Nach dem Frieden von Rijswijk, bei dem

seinen Feldherrn Karl IV. So kam es in den Jahren 1632 bis 1661 zur Besetzung von Lothringen, der Verwüstung von St.
Arnual und auch der militärischen Ausbreitung im Elsass seit dem Jahr 1633.
Frankreich nützte die wirre Situation mit zunehmenden Expansionsbestrebungen an seiner Ostgrenze.
Der kaiserliche General Matthias Gallas überquerte im Sommer 1635 mit
kroatischen und spanischen Truppen den Rhein, drängte die Protestanten zurück, eroberte Kaiserslautern, brandschatzte Kusel und
belagerte Zweibrücken.
